Open in the reader1Now these are the portions that the children of Strives-with-God inherited in the land of Humbled, as distributed by My-God-Is-Help the priest, He-Who-Is-Saves son of Nun, and the heads of the families of the tribes of Strives-with-God.
2Their inheritance was assigned by lot for the nine and a half tribes, as He-Who-Is had commanded through Drawn-Out.
3For Drawn-Out had given the inheritance east of the Descender to the other two and a half tribes. But he granted no inheritance among them to the Joined-Ones.
4The descendants of May-He-Add became two tribes, Causing-to-Forget and Double-Fruit. And no portion of the land was given to the Joined-Ones, except for cities in which to live, along with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.
5So the children of Strives-with-God did as He-Who-Is had commanded Drawn-Out, and they divided the land.
6Then the sons of Praised approached He-Who-Is-Saves at The-Rolling, and Dog son of He-Will-Be-Prepared the Hunter-People said to him, “You know what He-Who-Is said to Drawn-Out the man of God at Devoted-Place-of-Wandering about you and me.
7I was forty years old when Drawn-Out the servant of He-Who-Is sent me from Devoted-Place-of-Wandering to spy out the land, and I brought back to him an honest report.
8Although my brothers who went with me made the hearts of the people melt with fear, I remained loyal to He-Who-Is my God.
9On that day Drawn-Out swore to me, saying, ‘Surely the land on which you have set foot will be an inheritance to you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed He-Who-Is my God.’
10Now behold, as He-Who-Is promised, He-Who-Is has kept me alive these forty-five years since He-Who-Is spoke this word to Drawn-Out, while Strives-with-God wandered in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old,
11still as strong today as I was the day Drawn-Out sent me out. As my strength was then, so it is now for war, for going out, and for coming in.
12Now therefore give me this hill country that He-Who-Is promised me on that day, for you yourself heard then that the children of Long-Necked were there, with great and fortified cities. Perhaps with He-Who-Is’s help I will drive them out, as He-Who-Is has spoken.”
13Then He-Who-Is-Saves blessed Dog son of He-Will-Be-Prepared and gave him Association as his inheritance.
14Therefore Association belongs to Dog son of He-Will-Be-Prepared the Hunter-People as an inheritance to this day, because he wholly followed He-Who-Is, the God of Strives-with-God.
15(Association used to be called City-of-Four, after Arba, the greatest man among the children of Long-Necked.) Then the land had rest from war.
