Meaning First Bible · Joshua · chapter 17 of 24

Now this was the allotment for the tribe of Causing-to-Forget as May-He-Add’s firstborn son, namely for Salesman the firstborn of Causing-to-Forget and father of the children of Heap-of-Witness, who had received Heap-of-Witness and Fertile-Plain because Salesman was a man of war.

So this allotment was for the rest of the descendants of Causing-to-Forget—the clans of My-Father-Is-Help, Portion, Vow-of-God, Shoulder, Well, and Name-of-Knowing. These are the other male descendants of the clans of Causing-to-Forget son of May-He-Add.

But Zelophehad son of Well (the son of Heap-of-Witness, the son of Salesman, the son of Causing-to-Forget) had no sons but only daughters. These are the names of his daughters: Disease, Trembler, Partridge, Queen, and Delightful.

They approached My-God-Is-Help the priest, He-Who-Is-Saves son of Nun, and the leaders, and said, “He-Who-Is commanded Drawn-Out to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” So He-Who-Is-Saves gave them an inheritance among their father’s brothers, in keeping with the command of He-Who-Is.

Thus ten shares fell to Causing-to-Forget, in addition to the land of Heap-of-Witness and Fertile-Plain beyond the Descender,

because the daughters of Causing-to-Forget received an inheritance among his sons. And the land of Heap-of-Witness belonged to the rest of the sons of Causing-to-Forget.

Now the border of Causing-to-Forget went from Happy to Michmethath near Shoulder, then southward to include the inhabitants of Spring-of-Apple-Tree.

The region of Apple belonged to Causing-to-Forget, but Apple itself, on the border of Causing-to-Forget, belonged to Double-Fruit.

From there the border continued southward to the Brook of Reed. There were cities belonging to Double-Fruit among the cities of Causing-to-Forget, but the border of Causing-to-Forget was on the north side of the brook and ended at the Sea.

Double-Fruit’s territory was to the south, and Causing-to-Forget’s was to the north, having the Sea as its border and adjoining Happy on the north and There-Is-Reward on the east.

Within There-Is-Reward and Happy, Causing-to-Forget was assigned House-of-Ease, Devouring-the-People, Generation (that is, Naphath), Spring-of-the-Dwelling, Taanach, and Rendezvous, each with their surrounding settlements.

But the descendants of Causing-to-Forget were unable to occupy these cities, because the Humbled-Ones were determined to stay in this land.

However, when the children of Strives-with-God grew stronger, they put the Humbled-Ones to forced labor; but they failed to drive them out completely.

Then the sons of May-He-Add said to He-Who-Is-Saves, “Why have you given us only one portion as an inheritance? We have many people, because He-Who-Is has blessed us abundantly.”

He-Who-Is-Saves answered them, “If you have so many people that the hill country of Double-Fruit is too small for you, go to the forest and clear for yourself an area in the land of the Open-Country-Dwellers and the Rephaim.”

“The hill country is not enough for us,” they replied, “and all the Humbled-Ones who live in the valley have iron chariots, both in House-of-Ease with its towns and in the Valley of God-Sows.”

So He-Who-Is-Saves said to the house of May-He-Add—to Double-Fruit and Causing-to-Forget—“You have many people and great strength. You shall not have just one allotment,

because the hill country will be yours as well. It is a forest; clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours. Although the Canaanites have iron chariots and although they are strong, you can drive them out.”
