Joshua 11
Open in the reader1Now when He-Will-Discern king of Settlement heard about these things, he sent word to Howler king of Strife; to the kings of Watch-Place and Sorcery;
to the kings of the north in the mountains, in the Arabah south of Harp, in the foothills, and in Naphoth-Generation to the west;
to the Humbled-Ones in the east and west; to the Mountaineers, Son-of-Terrors, Open-Country-Dwellers, and Trodden-Ones in the hill country; and to the Tent-Villagers at the foot of Abrupt in the land of Watchtower.
So these kings came out with all their armies, a multitude as numerous as the sand on the seashore, along with a great number of horses and chariots.
All these kings joined forces and encamped at the waters of Heights to fight against Strives-with-God.
Then He-Who-Is said to He-Who-Is-Saves, “Do not be afraid of them, for by this time tomorrow I will deliver all of them slain before Strives-with-God. You are to hamstring their horses and burn up their chariots.”
So by the waters of Heights, He-Who-Is-Saves and his whole army came upon them suddenly and attacked them,
and He-Who-Is delivered them into the hand of Strives-with-God, who struck them down and pursued them all the way to Greater Sidon and Burnings-of-Waters, and eastward as far as the Valley of Watchtower. They struck them down, leaving no survivors.
He-Who-Is-Saves treated them as He-Who-Is had told him; he hamstrung their horses and burned up their chariots.
At that time He-Who-Is-Saves turned back and captured Settlement and put its king to the sword, because Settlement was formerly the head of all these kingdoms.
The Israelites put everyone in Settlement to the sword, devoting them to destruction. Nothing that breathed remained, and He-Who-Is-Saves burned down Settlement itself.
He-Who-Is-Saves captured all these kings and their cities and put them to the sword. He devoted them to destruction, as Drawn-Out He-Who-Is’s servant had commanded.
Yet Strives-with-God did not burn any of the cities built on their mounds, except Settlement, which He-Who-Is-Saves burned.
The children of Strives-with-God took for themselves all the plunder and livestock of these cities, but they put all the people to the sword until they had completely destroyed them, not sparing anyone who breathed.
As He-Who-Is had commanded His servant Drawn-Out, so Drawn-Out commanded He-Who-Is-Saves. That is what He-Who-Is-Saves did, leaving nothing undone of all that He-Who-Is had commanded Drawn-Out.
So He-Who-Is-Saves took this entire region: the hill country, all South-Country, all the land of Goshen, the western foothills, the Arabah, and the mountains of Strives-with-God and their foothills,
from Mount Smooth, which rises toward Hairy, as far as Baal-of-Fortune in the Valley of White-Mountain at the foot of Mount Abrupt. He captured all their kings and struck them down, putting them to death.
He-Who-Is-Saves waged war against all these kings for a long period of time.
No city made peace with the children of Strives-with-God except the Tent-Villagers living in Hill-Town; all others were taken in battle.
For it was of He-Who-Is to harden their hearts to engage Strives-with-God in battle, so that they would be set apart for destruction and would receive no mercy, being annihilated as He-Who-Is had commanded Drawn-Out.
At that time He-Who-Is-Saves proceeded to eliminate the children of Long-Necked from the hill country of Association, Oracle-Place, and Grape, and from all the hill country of Praised and of Strives-with-God. He-Who-Is-Saves devoted them to destruction, along with their cities.
No children of Long-Necked were left in the land of the children of Strives-with-God; only in Stronghold, Wine-Press, and Ravager did any survive.
So He-Who-Is-Saves took the entire land, in keeping with all that He-Who-Is had spoken to Drawn-Out. And He-Who-Is-Saves gave it as an inheritance to Strives-with-God according to the allotments to their tribes. Then the land had rest from war.
