In the seventh month, God-Hears son of He-Who-Is-Gives, the son of My-God-Has-Heard, who was a member of the royal family and one of the king’s chief officers, came with ten men to He-Who-Is-Great son of My-Brother-Has-Risen at Watchtower, and they ate a meal together there.

Then God-Hears son of He-Who-Is-Gives and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down He-Who-Is-Great son of My-Brother-Has-Risen, the son of Rock-Badger, with the sword, killing the one whom the king of Confusion had appointed to govern the land.

God-Hears also killed all the Praised-Ones who were with He-Who-Is-Great at Watchtower, as well as the Kasdites soldiers who were there.

On the second day after the murder of He-Who-Is-Great, when no one yet knew about it,

eighty men who had shaved off their beards, torn their garments, and cut themselves came from Shoulder, Shiloh, and Watch-Mountain, carrying grain offerings and frankincense for the house of He-Who-Is.

And God-Hears son of He-Who-Is-Gives went out from Watchtower to meet them, weeping as he went. When God-Hears encountered the men, he said, “Come to He-Who-Is-Great son of My-Brother-Has-Risen.”

And when they came into the city, God-Hears son of He-Who-Is-Gives and the men with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern.

But ten of the men among them said to God-Hears, “Do not kill us, for we have hidden treasure in the field—wheat, barley, oil, and honey!” So he refrained from killing them with the others.

Now the cistern into which God-Hears had thrown all the bodies of the men he had struck down along with He-Who-Is-Great was a large one that King Healer had made for fear of Offensiveness king of Strives-with-God. God-Hears son of He-Who-Is-Gives filled it with the slain.

Then God-Hears took captive all the remnant of the people of Watchtower—the daughters of the king along with all the others who remained in Watchtower—over whom Nebuzaradan captain of the guard had appointed He-Who-Is-Great son of My-Brother-Has-Risen. God-Hears son of He-Who-Is-Gives took them captive and set off to cross over to the children of Kindred.

When He-Who-Is-Has-Been-Gracious son of Shaven and all the commanders of the armies with him heard of all the crimes that God-Hears son of He-Who-Is-Gives had committed,

they took all their men and went to fight God-Hears son of He-Who-Is-Gives. And they found him near the great pool in Hill-Town.

When all the people with God-Hears saw He-Who-Is-Has-Been-Gracious son of Shaven and all the commanders of the army with him, they rejoiced,

and all the people whom God-Hears had taken captive at Watchtower turned and went over to He-Who-Is-Has-Been-Gracious son of Shaven.

But God-Hears son of He-Who-Is-Gives and eight of his men escaped from He-Who-Is-Has-Been-Gracious and went to the children of Kindred.

Then He-Who-Is-Has-Been-Gracious son of Shaven and all the commanders of the armies with him took the whole remnant of the people from Watchtower whom he had recovered from God-Hears son of He-Who-Is-Gives after God-Hears had killed He-Who-Is-Great son of My-Brother-Has-Risen: the soldiers, women, children, and court officials he had brought back from Hill-Town.

And they went and stayed in Geruth Pining, near House-of-Bread, in order to proceed into Two-Straits

to escape the Kasdites. For they were afraid of the Kasdites because God-Hears son of He-Who-Is-Gives had struck down He-Who-Is-Great son of My-Brother-Has-Risen, whom the king of Confusion had appointed over the land.
