2“Take a census of the whole congregation of Strives-with-God by the houses of their fathers—all those twenty years of age or older who can serve in the army of Strives-with-God.”
3So on the plains of From-the-Father by the Descender, across from Moon, Drawn-Out and My-God-Is-Help the priest issued the instruction,
4“Take a census of the men twenty years of age or older, as He-Who-Is has commanded Drawn-Out.” And these were the children of Strives-with-God who came out of the land of Two-Straits:
5See-a-Son was the firstborn of Strives-with-God. These were the descendants of See-a-Son: The Hanochite clan from Dedicated, the child of Distinguished clan from Distinguished,
6the child of Courtyard clan from Courtyard, and the Carmite clan from My-Vineyard.
7These were the clans of See-a-Son-One, and their registration numbered 43,730.
8Now the son of Distinguished was My-God-Is-Father,
9and the sons of My-God-Is-Father were Day-of-God, Dathan, and Father-Is-Exalted. It was Dathan and Father-Is-Exalted, chosen by the congregation, who rebelled against Drawn-Out and Aaron with the followers of Shaven who rebelled against He-Who-Is.
10And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Shaven, whose followers died when the fire consumed 250 men. They serve as a warning sign.
11However, the line of Shaven did not die out.
12These were the descendants of Heard by their clans: The child of Day-of-God clan from Day-of-God, the child of Right-Hand clan from Right-Hand, the child of He-Will-Establish clan from He-Will-Establish,
13the Sunrise-One clan from Dawning, and the Shaulite clan from Asked-For.
14These were the clans of Hearing-One, and there were 22,200 men.
15These were the descendants of Fortune by their clans: The Zephonite clan from Zephon, the Haggite clan from Festal, the Shunite clan from Shuni,
16the Oznite clan from My-Hearing, the Erite clan from My-Watcher,
17the child of Wandering clan from Wandering, and the Arelite clan from Heroic.
18These were the clans of Fortune, and their registration numbered 40,500.
19The sons of Praised were Watchful and Vigorous, but they died in the land of Humbled.
20These were the descendants of Praised by their clans: The Shelanite clan from Asked-For, the child of Breach clan from Breach, and the Sunrise-One clan from Dawning.
21And these were the descendants of Breach: the child of Courtyard clan from Courtyard and the child of Spared clan from Spared.
22These were the clans of Praised, and their registration numbered 76,500.
23These were the descendants of There-Is-Reward by their clans: The child of Crimson-Worm clan from Crimson-Worm, the Punite clan from Madder-Plant,
24the child of He-Will-Return clan from He-Will-Return, and the child of Watch-Place clan from Watch-Place.
25These were the clans of There-Is-Reward, and their registration numbered 64,300.
26These were the descendants of Dwelling by their clans: The child of Sered clan from Sered, the child of Oak clan from Oak, and the child of Wait-for-God clan from Wait-for-God.
27These were the clans of Dwelling, and their registration numbered 60,500.
28The descendants of May-He-Add included the clans of Causing-to-Forget and Double-Fruit.
29These were the descendants of Causing-to-Forget: The child of Salesman clan from Salesman, the father of Heap-of-Witness, and the Witness-Heap-One clan from Heap-of-Witness.
30These were the descendants of Heap-of-Witness: the child of My-Father-Is-Help clan from My-Father-Is-Help, the child of Portion clan from Portion,
31the child of Upright-with-God clan from Upright-with-God, the child of Shoulder clan from Shoulder,
32the child of Name-of-Knowing clan from Name-of-Knowing, and the child of Well clan from Well.
33Now Zelophehad son of Well had no sons but only daughters. The names of his daughters were Disease, Rest, Partridge, Queen, and Delightful.
34These were the clans of Causing-to-Forget, and their registration numbered 52,700.
35These were the descendants of Double-Fruit by their clans: The child of Shuthelah clan from Shuthelah, the child of Firstborn clan from Firstborn, and the child of Camp clan from Camp.
36And the descendants of Shuthelah were the Eranite clan from Eran.
37These were the clans of Double-Fruit, and their registration numbered 32,500. These clans were the descendants of May-He-Add.
38These were the descendants of Son-of-the-Right-Hand by their clans: The Belaite clan from Swallowed, the child of Flowing clan from Flowing, the child of My-Brother-Is-Exalted clan from My-Brother-Is-Exalted,
39the Shuphamite clan from Shupham, and the Huphamite clan from Hupham.
40And the descendants of Swallowed from Wandering and Pleasantness were the child of Wandering clan from Wandering and the Naamite clan from Pleasantness.
41These were the clans of Son-of-the-Right-Hand, and their registration numbered 45,600.
42These were the descendants of Judge by their clans: The Shuhamite clan from Shuham. These were the clans of Judge.
43All of them were Shuhamite clans, and their registration numbered 64,400.
44These were the descendants of Happy by their clans: The Imnite clan from Right-Hand, the Ishvite clan from He-Resembles, and the Beriite clan from In-Misfortune.
45And these were the descendants of In-Misfortune: the child of Company clan from Company and the child of My-King-Is-God clan from My-King-Is-God.
46And the name of Happy’s daughter was Overflow.
47These were the clans of Happy, and their registration numbered 53,400.
48These were the descendants of My-Wrestling by their clans: The child of God-Allots clan from God-Allots, the Gunite clan from Protected,
49the child of Formed clan from Formed, and the child of Recompense clan from Recompense.
50These were the clans of My-Wrestling, and their registration numbered 45,400.
51These men of Strives-with-God numbered 601,730 in all.
52Then He-Who-Is said to Drawn-Out,
53“The land is to be divided among the tribes as an inheritance, according to the number of names.
54Increase the inheritance for a large tribe and decrease it for a small one; each tribe is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those registered.
55Indeed, the land must be divided by lot; they shall receive their inheritance according to the names of the tribes of their fathers.
56Each inheritance is to be divided by lot among the larger and smaller tribes.”
57Now these were the Joined-Ones numbered by their clans: The child of Sojourner-There clan from Sojourner-There, the Allied-One clan from Assembly, and the Merarite clan from Bitter.
58These were the families of the Joined-Ones: The Libnite clan, the Association-Seat-One clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan, and the Shaven-One clan. Now Assembly was the father of Kindred-Is-Exalted,
59and Kindred-Is-Exalted’s wife was named He-Who-Is-Glorious. She was also a daughter of Joined-One, born to Joined-One in Two-Straits. To Kindred-Is-Exalted she bore Aaron, Drawn-Out, and their sister Bitter.
60Generous, He-Is-My-Father, My-God-Is-Help, and Coast-of-Palms were born to Aaron,
61but Generous and He-Is-My-Father died when they offered unauthorized fire before He-Who-Is.
62The registration of the Levites totaled 23,000, every male a month old or more; they were not numbered among the other Strives-with-Godites, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.
63These were the ones numbered by Drawn-Out and My-God-Is-Help the priest when they counted the children of Strives-with-God on the plains of From-the-Father by the Descender, across from Moon.
64Among all these, however, there was not one who had been numbered by Drawn-Out and Aaron the priest when they counted the children of Strives-with-God in the Wilderness of Sinai.
65For He-Who-Is had told them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one was left except Dog son of He-Will-Be-Prepared and He-Who-Is-Saves son of Nun.
