Numbers 1
Open in the reader1On the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites had come out of the land of Two-Straits, He-Who-Is spoke to Drawn-Out in the Tent of Meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai. He said:
“Take a census of the whole congregation of Strives-with-God by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.
You and Aaron are to number those who are twenty years of age or older by their divisions—everyone who can serve in Strives-with-God’s army.
And one man from each tribe, the head of each family, must be there with you.
These are the names of the men who are to assist you: From the tribe of See-a-Son, My-God-Is-a-Rock son of The-Almighty-Is-Light;
from Heard, My-Peace-Is-God son of My-Rock-Is-the-Almighty;
from Praised, Enchanter son of My-Kinsman-Is-Generous;
from There-Is-Reward, God-Has-Given son of Little-One;
from Dwelling, My-God-Is-Father son of Strength;
from the sons of May-He-Add: from Double-Fruit, My-God-Has-Heard son of My-Kinsman-Is-Splendor, and from Causing-to-Forget, God-Is-My-Reward son of The-Rock-Has-Ransomed;
from Son-of-the-Right-Hand, My-Father-Has-Judged son of Cutter-of-Me;
from Judge, My-Brother-Is-Help son of My-Kinsman-Is-the-Almighty;
from Happy, My-Encounter-Is-God son of Troubler;
from Fortune, My-God-Has-Added son of Known-by-God;
and from My-Wrestling, My-Brother-Is-Evil son of Spring.”
These men were appointed from the congregation; they were the leaders of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the clans of Strives-with-God.
So Drawn-Out and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name,
and on the first day of the second month they assembled the whole congregation and recorded their ancestry by clans and families, counting one by one the names of those twenty years of age or older,
just as He-Who-Is had commanded Drawn-Out. So Drawn-Out numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai:
From the sons of See-a-Son, the firstborn of Strives-with-God, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
those registered to the tribe of See-a-Son numbered 46,500.
From the sons of Heard, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
those registered to the tribe of Heard numbered 59,300.
From the sons of Fortune, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
those registered to the tribe of Fortune numbered 45,650.
From the sons of Praised, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
those registered to the tribe of Praised numbered 74,600.
From the sons of There-Is-Reward, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
those registered to the tribe of There-Is-Reward numbered 54,400.
From the sons of Dwelling, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
those registered to the tribe of Dwelling numbered 57,400.
From the sons of May-He-Add: From the sons of Double-Fruit, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
those registered to the tribe of Double-Fruit numbered 40,500.
And from the sons of Causing-to-Forget, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
those registered to the tribe of Causing-to-Forget numbered 32,200.
From the sons of Son-of-the-Right-Hand, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
those registered to the tribe of Son-of-the-Right-Hand numbered 35,400.
From the sons of Judge, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
those registered to the tribe of Judge numbered 62,700.
From the sons of Happy, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
those registered to the tribe of Happy numbered 41,500.
From the sons of My-Wrestling, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
those registered to the tribe of My-Wrestling numbered 53,400.
These were the men numbered by Drawn-Out and Aaron, with the assistance of the twelve leaders of Strives-with-God, each one representing his family.
So all the children of Strives-with-God twenty years of age or older who could serve in Strives-with-God’s army were counted according to their families.
And all those counted totaled 603,550.
The Joined-Ones, however, were not numbered along with them by the tribe of their fathers.
For He-Who-Is had said to Drawn-Out:
“Do not number the tribe of Joined in the census with the other children of Strives-with-God.
Instead, you are to appoint the Joined-Ones over the Dwelling of the Testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They shall carry the Dwelling and all its articles, care for it, and camp around it.
Whenever the Dwelling is to move, the Joined-Ones are to take it down, and whenever it is to be pitched, the Joined-Ones are to set it up. Any outsider who goes near it must be put to death.
The children of Strives-with-God are to camp by their divisions, each man in his own camp and under his own standard.
But the Joined-Ones are to camp around the Dwelling of the Testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the congregation of Strives-with-God. So the Joined-Ones are responsible for the Dwelling of the Testimony.”
Thus the children of Strives-with-God did everything just as He-Who-Is had commanded Drawn-Out.
