Open in the reader1Now the family heads of the Joined-Ones approached My-God-Is-Help the priest, He-Who-Is-Saves son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribes of Strives-with-God
2at Shiloh in the land of Humbled and said to them, “He-Who-Is commanded through Drawn-Out that we be given cities in which to live, together with pasturelands for our livestock.”
3So by the command of He-Who-Is, the children of Strives-with-God gave the Joined-Ones these cities and their pasturelands out of their own inheritance:
4The first lot came out for the Allied-One clans. The Joined-Ones who were descendants of Aaron the priest received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Praised, Heard, and Son-of-the-Right-Hand.
5The remaining descendants of Assembly received ten cities by lot from the tribes of Double-Fruit, Judge, and the half-tribe of Causing-to-Forget.
6The descendants of Sojourner-There received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of There-Is-Reward, Happy, My-Wrestling, and the half-tribe of Causing-to-Forget in Fertile-Plain.
7And the descendants of Bitter received twelve cities from the tribes of See-a-Son, Fortune, and Dwelling.
8So the children of Strives-with-God allotted to the Joined-Ones these cities, together with their pasturelands, as He-Who-Is had commanded through Drawn-Out.
9From the tribes of Praised and Heard, they designated these cities by name
10to the descendants of Aaron from the Allied-One clans of the children of Joined, because the first lot fell to them:
11They gave them City-of-Four (that is, Association), with its surrounding pasturelands, in the hill country of Praised. (Arba was the father of Anak.)
12But they had given the fields and villages around the city to Dog son of He-Will-Be-Prepared as his possession.
13So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave these cities, together with their pasturelands: Association, a city of refuge for the manslayer, Whiteness,
14Abundant, Place-of-Hearing,
15Sandy-Place, Oracle-Place,
16Spring-of-Pomegranate, Inclined, and House-of-Sun—nine cities from these two tribes, together with their pasturelands.
17And from the tribe of Son-of-the-Right-Hand they gave them Hill-Town, Hillock,
18Answers, and Hidden-Place—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
19In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
20The remaining child of Assembly clans of the Joined-Ones were allotted these cities: From the tribe of Double-Fruit
21they were given Shoulder in the hill country of Double-Fruit (a city of refuge for the manslayer), Portion,
22Kibzaim, and House-of-Hollow—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
23From the tribe of Judge they were given Meeting, Mound,
24Place-of-Deer, and Wine-Press-of-the-Pomegranate—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
25And from the half-tribe of Causing-to-Forget they were given Taanach and Wine-Press-of-the-Pomegranate—two cities, together with their pasturelands.
26In all, ten cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the rest of the child of Assembly clans.
27This is what the Joined-Ones clans of the Sojourner-Thereites were given: From the half-tribe of Causing-to-Forget they were given Exile in Fertile-Plain, a city of refuge for the manslayer, and House-of-Ashtoreth—two cities, together with their pasturelands.
28From the tribe of There-Is-Reward they were given Hardness, Pasture,
29Heights, and Spring-of-Gardens—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
30From the tribe of Happy they were given Asked-For, Servile,
31Smoothness, and Broad-Place—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
32And from the tribe of My-Wrestling they were given Devoted-Place in The-Circuit (a city of refuge for the manslayer), Hot-Springs-of-Dor, and Kartan—three cities, together with their pasturelands.
33In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the Sojourners-There clans.
34This is what the Merarite clan (the rest of the Joined-Ones) were given: From the tribe of Dwelling they were given The-People-Will-Be-Lamented, Kartah,
35Dunghill, and Pasture—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
36From the tribe of See-a-Son they were given Stronghold, Trodden-Place,
37Eastern-Places, and Splendor—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
38And from the tribe of Fortune they were given Heights in Heap-of-Witness, a city of refuge for the manslayer, Two-Camps,
39Reckoning, and He-Helps—four cities in all, together with their pasturelands.
40In all, twelve cities were allotted to the clans of Bitter, the remaining Joined-Ones clans.
41For the Joined-Ones, then, there were forty-eight cities in all, together with their pasturelands, within the territory of the children of Strives-with-God.
42Each of these cities had its own surrounding pasturelands; this was true for all the cities.
43Thus He-Who-Is gave Strives-with-God all the land He had sworn to give their fathers, and they took possession of it and settled in it.
44And He-Who-Is gave them rest on every side, just as He had sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies could stand against them, for He-Who-Is delivered all their enemies into their hand.
45Not one of all He-Who-Is’s good promises to the house of Strives-with-God had failed; everything was fulfilled.
