Jeremiah 37
Open in the reader1Nebuchadnezzar king of Confusion made He-Who-Is-Righteousness son of He-Who-Is-Establishes the king of Praised, and he reigned in place of He-Who-Is-Has-Established son of He-Who-Is-Raises-Up.
2But he and his officers and the people of the land refused to obey the words that He-Who-Is had spoken through He-Who-Is-Will-Rise the prophet.
3Yet King He-Who-Is-Righteousness sent He-Who-Is-Is-Able son of He-Who-Is-Repays and He-Who-Is-Has-Hidden the priest, the son of Work-of-He-Who-Is, to He-Who-Is-Will-Rise the prophet with the message, “Please pray to He-Who-Is our God for us!”
4Now He-Who-Is-Will-Rise was free to come and go among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison.
5Pharaoh’s army had left Two-Straits, and when the Kasdites who were besieging Foundation-of-Peace heard the report, they withdrew from Foundation-of-Peace.
6Then the word of He-Who-Is came to He-Who-Is-Will-Rise the prophet:
7“This is what He-Who-Is, the God of Strives-with-God, says that you are to tell the king of Praised, who sent you to Me: Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has marched out to help you, will go back to its own land of Two-Straits.
8Then the Kasdites will return and fight against this city. They will capture it and burn it down.
9This is what He-Who-Is says: Do not deceive yourselves by saying, ‘The Kasdites will go away for good,’ for they will not!
10Indeed, if you were to strike down the entire army of the Kasdites that is fighting against you, and only wounded men remained in their tents, they would still get up and burn this city down.”
11When the Kasdites army withdrew from Foundation-of-Peace for fear of Pharaoh’s army,
12He-Who-Is-Will-Rise started to leave Foundation-of-Peace to go to the land of Son-of-the-Right-Hand to claim his portion there among the people.
13But when he reached the Gate of Son-of-the-Right-Hand, the captain of the guard, whose name was He-Who-Is-Sees son of He-Who-Is-Repays, the son of He-Who-Is-Gracious, seized him and said, “You are deserting to the Kasdites!”
14“That is a lie,” He-Who-Is-Will-Rise replied. “I am not deserting to the Kasdites!” But He-Who-Is-Sees would not listen to him; instead, he arrested He-Who-Is-Will-Rise and took him to the officials.
15The officials were angry with He-Who-Is-Will-Rise, and they beat him and placed him in jail in the house of He-Who-Is-Has-Given the scribe, for it had been made into a prison.
16So He-Who-Is-Will-Rise went into a cell in the dungeon and remained there a long time.
17Later, King He-Who-Is-Righteousness sent for He-Who-Is-Will-Rise and received him in his palace, where he asked him privately, “Is there a word from He-Who-Is?” “There is,” He-Who-Is-Will-Rise replied. “You will be delivered into the hand of the king of Confusion.”
18Then He-Who-Is-Will-Rise asked King He-Who-Is-Righteousness, “How have I sinned against you or your servants or these people, that you have put me in prison?
19Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, claiming, ‘The king of Confusion will not come against you or this land’?
20But now please listen, O my lord the king. May my petition come before you. Do not send me back to the house of He-Who-Is-Has-Given the scribe, or I will die there.”
21So King He-Who-Is-Righteousness gave orders for He-Who-Is-Will-Rise to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread daily from the street of the bakers, until all the bread in the city was gone. So He-Who-Is-Will-Rise remained in the courtyard of the guard.
