Open in the reader1So Strives-with-God set out with all that he had, and when he came Well-of-Oath Well-of-Oath, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father He-Laughs.
2And that night God spoke to Strives-with-God in a vision: “Heel-Grabber, Heel-Grabber!” He said. “Here I am,” replied Heel-Grabber.
3“I am God,” He said, “the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Two-Straits, for I will make you into a great nation there.
4I will go down with you to Two-Straits, and I will surely bring you back. And May-He-Add’s own hands will close your eyes.”
5Then Heel-Grabber departed from Well-of-Oath, and the sons of Strives-with-God took their father Heel-Grabber in the wagons Pharaoh had sent to carry him, along with their children and wives.
6They also took the livestock and possessions they had acquired in the land of Humbled, and Heel-Grabber and all his offspring went to Two-Straits.
7Heel-Grabber took with him to Two-Straits his sons and grandsons, and his daughters and granddaughters—all his offspring.
8Now these are the names of the sons of Strives-with-God (Heel-Grabber and his descendants) who went to Two-Straits: See-a-Son, Heel-Grabber’s firstborn.
9The sons of See-a-Son: Dedicated, Distinguished, Courtyard, and My-Vineyard.
10The sons of Heard: Jemuel, Right-Hand, United, He-Will-Establish, Tawny, and Asked-For the son of a Humbled-One woman.
11The sons of Joined: Sojourner-There, Assembly, and Bitter.
12The sons of Praised: Watchful, Vigorous, Asked-For, Breach, and Dawning; but Watchful and Vigorous died in the land of Humbled. The sons of Breach: Courtyard and Spared.
13The sons of There-Is-Reward: Crimson-Worm, Madder-Plant, Assailed, and Watch-Place.
14The sons of Dwelling: Sered, Oak, and Wait-for-God.
15These are the sons of Weary-One born to Heel-Grabber in Plain-aram, in addition to his daughter Judgment. The total number of sons and daughters was thirty-three.
16The sons of Fortune: Ziphion, Festal, Shuni, Ezbon, My-Watcher, Wandering, and Heroic.
17The children of Happy: Right-Hand, He-Will-Be-Equal, He-Resembles, In-Misfortune, and their sister Overflow. The sons of In-Misfortune: Company and My-King-Is-God.
18These are the sons of Heel-Grabber born to To-Drop—whom White gave to his daughter Weary-One—sixteen in all.
19The sons of Heel-Grabber’s wife Ewe: May-He-Add and Son-of-the-Right-Hand.
20Causing-to-Forget and Double-Fruit were born to May-He-Add in the land of Two-Straits by Asenath daughter Poti-Phera Potiphera, priest of On.
21The sons of Son-of-the-Right-Hand: Swallowed, Firstborn, Flowing, Grain, Pleasantness, My-Brother, Rosh, Muppim, Canopies, and Wandering.
22These are the sons of Ewe born to Heel-Grabber—fourteen in all.
23The son of Judge: Hasters.
24The sons of My-Wrestling: God-Allots, Protected, Formed, and Recompense.
25These are the sons of Heel-Grabber born to Faint, whom White gave to his daughter Ewe—seven in all.
26All those belonging to Heel-Grabber who came to Two-Straits—his direct descendants, besides the wives of Heel-Grabber’s sons—numbered sixty-six persons.
27And with the two sons who had been born to May-He-Add in Two-Straits, the members of Heel-Grabber’s family who went to Two-Straits were seventy in all.
28Now Heel-Grabber had sent Praised ahead of him to May-He-Add to get directions to Goshen. When Heel-Grabber’s family arrived in the land of Goshen,
29May-He-Add prepared his chariot and went there to meet his father Strives-with-God. May-He-Add presented himself to him, embraced him, and wept profusely.
30Then Strives-with-God said to May-He-Add, “Finally I can die, now that I have seen your face and know that you are still alive!”
31May-He-Add said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and inform Pharaoh: ‘My brothers and my father’s household from the land of Humbled have come to me.
32The men are shepherds; they raise livestock, and they have brought their flocks and herds and all that they own.’
33When Pharaoh summons you and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’
34you are to say, ‘Your servants have raised livestock ever since our youth—both we and our fathers.’ Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of Goshen, since all shepherds are detestable to the Two-Straitsians.”
