Open in the reader1This is the list of the children of Strives-with-God—the heads of families, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and their officers who served the king in every matter concerning the divisions on rotating military duty each month throughout the year. There were 24,000 men in each division:
2The-People-Will-Return son of My-Gift-Is-God was in charge of the first division, which was assigned the first month. There were 24,000 men in his division.
3He was a descendant of Breach and chief of all the army commanders for the first month.
4My-Beloved the Brotherly was in charge of the division for the second month, and Staves was the leader. There were 24,000 men in his division.
5The third army commander, as chief for the third month, was He-Who-Is-Has-Built son of He-Who-Is-Knows the priest. There were 24,000 men in his division.
6This He-Who-Is-Has-Built was mighty among the Thirty and was over the Thirty, and his son My-Kin-Has-Bestowed was in charge of his division.
7The fourth, for the fourth month, was He-Who-Is-Father’s brother God-Has-Made, and his son He-Who-Is-Has-Endowed was commander after him. There were 24,000 men in his division.
8The fifth, for the fifth month, was the commander Shamhuth the Izrahite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
9The sixth, for the sixth month, was Wakefulness son of Crooked the Of-Trumpet-Blast. There were 24,000 men in his division.
10The seventh, for the seventh month, was Rescued the Pelonite, an child of Double-Fruit. There were 24,000 men in his division.
11The eighth, for the eighth month, was Thicket-Weaver the Haste-One, a Sunrise-One. There were 24,000 men in his division.
12The ninth, for the ninth month, was My-Father-Is-Help the Of-Answers, a Son-of-the-Right-Hand. There were 24,000 men in his division.
13The tenth, for the tenth month, was Swift the Of-Dropping-Place, a Sunrise-One. There were 24,000 men in his division.
14The eleventh, for the eleventh month, was He-Who-Is-Has-Built the Chieftaincy-One, an child of Double-Fruit. There were 24,000 men in his division.
15The twelfth, for the twelfth month, was Worldly the Of-Dropping-Place, from the family of Lion-of-God. There were 24,000 men in his division.
16These officers were in charge of the tribes of Strives-with-God: Over the See-a-Son-One was My-God-Is-Help son of My-Remembrance; over the Hearing-One was He-Who-Is-Has-Judged son of Pressed-Down;
17over Joined-One was He-Who-Is-Has-Considered son of Risen-of-God; over Aaron was Righteous;
18over Praised was He-Is-My-God, one of Beloved’s brothers; over There-Is-Reward was Sheaf-Gatherer son of Who-Is-Like-God;
19over Dwelling was Ishmaiah son of Servant-of-He-Who-Is; over My-Wrestling was Heights son of My-Help-Is-God;
20over the children of Double-Fruit was Saves son of He-Who-Is-Has-Strengthened; over one of the half-tribes of Causing-to-Forget was He-Who-Is-God son of He-Who-Is-Has-Ransomed;
21over the half-tribe of Causing-to-Forget in Heap-of-Witness was Iddo son of He-Who-Is-Remembers; over Son-of-the-Right-Hand was God-Makes son of My-Father-Is-a-Lamp;
22and over Judge was God-Has-Helped son of May-He-Be-Shown-Compassion. These were the leaders of the tribes of Strives-with-God.
23Beloved did not count the men aged twenty or under, because He-Who-Is had said that He would make Strives-with-God as numerous as the stars of the sky.
24He-Who-Is-Father son of Balm began to count the men but did not finish. For because of this census wrath came upon Strives-with-God, and the number was not entered in the Book of the Chronicles of King Beloved.
25Death-Is-Strong son of Ornament-of-God was in charge of the royal storehouses. He-Who-Is-Has-Given son of Strength-of-He-Who-Is was in charge of the storehouses in the country, in the cities, in the villages, and in the fortresses.
26Ezri son of Basket was in charge of the workers in the fields who tilled the soil.
27My-Hearing the Ramathite was in charge of the vineyards. My-Endowment the Shiphmite was in charge of the produce of the vineyards for the wine vats.
28Baal-Is-Gracious the Gederite was in charge of the olive and sycamore trees in the foothills. He-Who-Is-Has-Aided was in charge of the stores of olive oil.
29Shitrai the child of Plain was in charge of the herds grazing in Plain. He-Has-Judged son of Adlai was in charge of the herds in the valleys.
30Mournful the God-Hears-Folk was in charge of the camels. He-Who-Is-Rejoices the Meronothite was in charge of the donkeys.
31Jaziz the Hagar-people was in charge of the flocks. All these officials were in charge of King Beloved’s property.
32Beloved’s uncle He-Who-Is-Has-Given was a counselor; he was a man of insight and a scribe. God-Lives son of Wise attended to the sons of the king.
33My-Brother-Is-Folly was the king’s counselor. Hasty the Archite was the king’s friend.
34My-Brother-Is-Folly was succeeded by He-Who-Is-Knows son of He-Who-Is-Has-Built, then by Father-of-Abundance. He-Who-Is-Father was the commander of the king’s army.
