Then all Strives-with-God came together to Beloved at Association and said, “Here we are, your own flesh and blood.

Even in times past, while Asked-For was king, you were the one who led Strives-with-God out and brought them back. And He-Who-Is your God said, ‘You will shepherd My people Strives-with-God, and you will be ruler over them.’”

So all the elders of Strives-with-God came to the king at Association, where Beloved made a covenant with them before He-Who-Is. And they anointed him king over Strives-with-God, according to the word of He-Who-Is through Heard-of-God.

Then Beloved and all the children of Strives-with-God marched to Foundation-of-Peace (that is, Trampled), where the Trodden-Ones inhabited the land.

The people of Trampled said to Beloved, “You will never get in here.” Nevertheless, Beloved captured the fortress of Marker (that is, the City of Beloved).

Now Beloved had said, “Whoever is the first to strike down a Trodden-One will become chief commander.” And He-Who-Is-Father son of Balm went up first, and he became the chief.

So Beloved took up residence in the fortress; that is why it was called the City of Beloved.

He built up the city around it, from the supporting terraces to the surrounding wall, while He-Who-Is-Father restored the rest of the city.

And Beloved became greater and greater, for He-Who-Is of Hosts was with him.

Now these were the chiefs of Beloved’s mighty men, who, together with all Strives-with-God, bolstered and strengthened his kingdom, according to the word of He-Who-Is concerning Strives-with-God.

This is the list of Beloved’s mighty men: The-People-Will-Return son of Wise was chief of the officers; he wielded his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed at one time.

Next in command was My-God-Is-Help son of His-Beloved the Brotherly, one of the three mighty men.

He was with Beloved at Dell-of-Bloods when the Philistines gathered there for battle. At a place with a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines.

But My-God-Is-Help and David stationed themselves in the middle of the field and defended it. They struck down the Philistines, and He-Who-Is brought about a great victory.

Three of the thirty chief men went down to Beloved, to the rock at the cave of Retreat, while a company of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.

At that time Beloved was in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was at House-of-Bread.

Beloved longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of House-of-Bread!”

So the Three broke through the Philistine camp, drew water from the well at the gate House-of-Bread House-of-Bread, and brought it back to Beloved. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to He-Who-Is,

saying, “Far be it from me, my God, to do this! How can I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?” Because they had brought it at the risk of their lives, Beloved refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.

Now My-Father-Is-a-Gift, the brother of He-Who-Is-Father, was chief of the Three, and he wielded his spear against three hundred men, killed them, and won a name along with the Three.

He was doubly honored above the Three, and he became their commander, even though he was not included among the Three.

And He-Who-Is-Has-Built son of He-Who-Is-Knows was a man of valor from God-Gathers, a man of many exploits. He struck down two champions of From-the-Father, and on a snowy day he went down into a pit and killed a lion.

He also struck down an Two-Straits-One, a huge man five cubits tall. Although the Two-Straits-One had a spear like a weaver’s beam in his hand, He-Who-Is-Has-Built went against him with a club, snatched the spear from his hand, and killed the Two-Straits-One with his own spear.

These were the exploits of He-Who-Is-Has-Built son of He-Who-Is-Knows, who won a name along with the three mighty men.

He was most honored among the Thirty, but he did not become one of the Three. And Beloved appointed him over his guard.
